No More Room in Hell 2 Stamina, Shove, and Kick
Treat stamina as a second health bar: shove to make space, swing with intent, leave enough to run.
Most No More Room in Hell 2 wipes that look like “bad aim” are empty stamina. Melee swings, kicks, shoves, and panicked repositioning all draw from the same bar. When it hits zero you still look armed, but you cannot create space, you cannot combo cleanly, and a grab becomes an infection timer. This page is the stamina contract. Weapon damage tables stay on Melee Combat; infected priorities stay on Infected Types.
Genesis and Armageddon already taught the engine that stamina-starved attacks do not combo the way a full bar does. You are not supposed to mash through a doorway. You are supposed to leave the fight you just started.
Keep enough stamina to leave
A useful rule in 1.0 lobbies: never spend the last third of the bar on a fight you could walk away from. That reserve pays for:
- one shove to break a grab windup
- a short sprint through a doorway you already cleared
- a climb or vault when extract is called
- helping a downed teammate without arriving empty
If the bar is already red, stop swinging. Reset behind a door. Let the horde funnel. Beginner Mistakes lists “emptying stamina in melee” because it is still the most common public-lobby death after sprinting cold into a Critical POI.
Normal walking and many sprints are cheaper than a panic melee cycle. If a walker pack has a lane around them, take the lane. Unlimited noise creates unlimited zombies; standing still to “finish the room” is how Survival Wave 3 deletes a roster.
Shove first, swing second
Shove is a spacing tool, not a damage button. Watch the infected’s attack. A timed shove interrupts the swing, creates a window, and lets a controlled head strike land. The cheap version of the combo is:
shove or kick → stagger or knockdown → head work
Kick hits harder and costs more stamina. Use kick when you need a bigger knockback on a runner in a doorway. Use shove when you need a cheap interrupt and still want enough bar left to leave. Light blades with poor stagger should open with shove more often than sledge players do — the sledge already buys knockdown; a knife does not.
Do not three-man the same walker. One Responder takes the target. Everyone else watches flanks. Triple-swinging one shambler is how the runner behind you gets a free grab.
Charged attacks are a tax
Charged and strong melee hit harder and cost more time and stamina. They are excellent on a lone Prime or a knockdown follow-up. They are terrible as your only plan in a crowd. If you start a charged swing and the angle is gone, cancel and reset rather than eating the full animation into empty air. That cancel habit is what separates Training Grounds graduates from Level 40 wipes.
Blunt weapons want heads and knockdown. Blades want limbs and mobility breaks. Both still need a bar. Read the swing types on Melee Combat once, then come back here when you keep dying “with a good weapon.”
Firearms do not replace stamina
Hotfix 1.0.4.0 tightened a lot of first-shot spread and punished pistol spam. That makes guns better at planned shots and worse as a panic spray when your melee bar is empty. If you dump stamina, then hip-fire a sidearm into a crowd, you get both problems at once. Shoot runners and screamers; melee the rest while you still have a shove left.
Noise from guns also feeds density. A stamina-positive player who walks around a pack is quieter than a tired player mag-dumping the M7 whose spread-per-shot just went up.
Mode-specific stamina
Scenario: long maps (Lewiston rural, Broadway streets, Raven Rock stairs) tax the bar between POIs. Do not arrive at a Critical POI already empty. Loot two named buildings, reset, then push.
Survival: speaker holds are five-minute stamina exams. Between waves, stand still and refill. After 1.0.4.0 you get a final respawn at the end of Wave 3 and at extract — that is not permission to go to zero on Wave 2. See Survival Mode.
Nightmare: recommended around Responder 40+ for a reason. Harder hits, more Primes, less ammo. Empty stamina is a one-way ticket. Practice the shove cadence on Normal first.
Skills and loadouts
Athlete-style stamina skills on Skills Tier List are not cosmetics. If your build is melee frontline, stamina is slot one. Loadout shop melee from Loadouts & Credits should be a weapon you can shove with, not a novelty two-hander you cannot recover from.
Checklist
- Glance at the bar before you enter a doorway.
- Shove on the attack, then swing; do not mash.
- Leave at ~30% if the room is still filling.
- Kick only when the extra knockback is worth the extra cost.
- Refill between Survival waves and before helicopter boards.
Stamina is how you still exist when the shotgun is empty. Guard it like a medkit.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers for Responders preparing for the next deployment.
Does sprinting use the same stamina as melee?
They share the same survival resource in practice: empty the bar on swings and you will not have an escape. Prefer walking around packs instead of fighting every walker.
Should I shove or kick?
Shove is the cheap interrupt. Kick is the heavier knockback. Save kicks for runners in chokes when you still have bar left to leave.
Why do my melee combos die when I am tired?
Stamina-starved attacks no longer combo the way a full bar does. Reset, shove, or leave instead of mashing.
Is this different after Hotfix 1.0.4.0?
Stamina rules did not get a new meter. Firearm spread changes make panic shooting worse, so melee stamina matters more, not less.
Where do I practice without permadeath?
Training Grounds, then Solo Mode. Online permadeath still applies in public Scenario and Survival.
