Experimental Gene Therapy in No More Room in Hell 2
Draw blood, wait for the device, inject the cure. One click is not immunity.
Experimental Gene Therapy is the only item in No More Room in Hell 2 that removes an active infection and can grant match-long immunity. Phalanx Pills only delay. Extracting also clears infection after you are safely out — that does not help the teammate who is about to turn on the pad. Official 1.0 notes: only one kit spawns per match. Treat it as squad property the moment someone picks it up.
This page is the two-step procedure, the cover callouts, and the failure modes that Steam threads keep repeating. Broader stage advice stays on How to Treat Infection. If the kit is gone and the timer is not, read Early Extraction before you gamble a main Responder.
The two-step procedure (this is the whole trick)
Gene Therapy is a syringe gun, not a candy. You must use it twice:
- First use — draw blood. The character samples their own DNA. A progress bar fills on the tool (community timing clusters around half a minute; some reports say a bit less). You are not cured during this window. The infection timer keeps running.
- Wait until the bar is ready (green). Spamming the fire button early does nothing useful and can waste the fight you should be hiding from.
- Second use — inject the synthesized antivirus. This is the actual cure and the immunity. The tool is consumed. There is no “half kit” to save for later.
If you inject once, holster, and sprint to the helicopter, you are still infected. Players describe sudden turns “after I already used gene therapy.” They used it once.
A half-used kit dropped by a dead teammate can still be finished by someone else. Call “kit on the floor, bar already filling” before anyone yeets it into a stairwell.
One spawn, so it is not “yours”
Official language: one Experimental Gene Therapy per match. Picking it up is a logistics event:
- Call it on VoIP immediately (hold E to link when nearby): “got the gene.”
- Ask who is actually infected or closest to veins / psychosis.
- Prefer the Responder holding keys, a carryable, or the only remaining pills.
- Do not self-inject “just in case” while three teammates are coughing unless the kit would otherwise sit unused in a corpse.
You can inject before you are infected to bank immunity for the rest of the deployment. That is a squad vote, not a loot-goblin default. Immunity is wasted if the person who took it then dies to a runner in a doorway.
Pills buy the thirty seconds — they are not the cure
Phalanx Pills come in bottles with three doses. Each dose suppresses symptoms for about five minutes. If you are already late-stage and you just started the blood draw, pop a pill before you commit to standing still, then finish both injects in a closed room or behind a barricade.
Do not start the first inject in a speaker hold or a Broadway intersection. The animation is a gift to grabbers.
Cover script that actually works
- “Drawing.” Someone watches your back for the bar.
- “Green, injecting.” Second click.
- “Cured / immune.” The squad can stop treating you as a future hostile.
If nobody can cover you, heal first if you are bleeding, then find a closet. A medkit does not pause infection; it only keeps you from dying of holes while the bar fills.
When the kit fails you anyway
Community reports that look like “bugs” are often procedure errors: injecting before the bar is ready, turning during the wait, or confusing pills with the gun. If the UI looks corrupt, still wait for a full ready state before the second click.
If there is no kit and no pills left, Self-Sacrifice exists so your corpse does not stand up and chase friends. On PC the default is K with a loaded firearm; consoles use a bumper-and-trigger hold. PC taps can fire immediately — do not bind it next to shove. Self-sacrifice is not a joke bind and it is not a substitute for gene therapy. Use it when turning is certain and loot should drop clean. Details belong in infection etiquette, not in a speedrun.
Shop versions of gene therapy (high account / character / Nightmare gates, expensive Credits) are loadout insurance for later progression, not something you should expect in the first week of a new Responder. Fund pills and a Rescue Beacon first; see Loadouts & Credits.
Extract still clears the disease — after you leave
A successful final extract clears infection on the surviving Responder. That is why a hatch or helicopter can be kinder than a heroic last stand. Early extract forfeits character XP; a turn on the pad can forfeit the character. Choose with Early Extraction open, not with hopium.
Checklist
- One kit per match — announce it.
- Two uses, wait for ready, then inject.
- Pills bridge the wait; they do not replace the gun.
- Cover the user; do not start the draw in a horde.
- If the kit is gone, hatch or self-sacrifice before you become the twelfth zombie.
Master the two clicks and public lobbies stop donating leveled Responders to a tool they already held.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers for Responders preparing for the next deployment.
Why do I need to use Gene Therapy twice?
First click draws blood. Wait until the device bar is ready, then inject the cure. One click leaves the infection timer running.
How many Gene Therapy kits spawn?
Official 1.0 notes: one per match. Treat it as squad loot, not a personal souvenir.
Do Phalanx Pills replace Gene Therapy?
No. Pills suppress for about five minutes (three doses per bottle). Only gene therapy removes the infection and can grant match immunity.
Can I use the kit if I am not infected yet?
Yes — it can grant immunity for the rest of the deployment. Ask the squad first; only one kit exists.
What if the kit is gone and I am about to turn?
Take early extraction if it is open, or use Self-Sacrifice (K on PC with a loaded gun) so you do not reanimate next to the pad.
